White...from What Color am I Today?
Two of my older books that have never been illustrated are, What Can We Do Today and is all about a Father and a his son planning activities for the day. The other book, What Color am I Today, is all about a parent and their daughter who wants to know all about the color of dress she is wearing for each day.
Written in 2009, none of these poems have ever been published. This one, “White,” was inspired by my daughter’s announcement that she had met the man of her dreams and was now engaged to marry him. Enjoy!
White
“What color am I today,” she asked with face all glowing bright
I said “today my little one, you’re beautiful in white”
“But white is not a color,” she said, “it’s just so very plain”
“It’s not at all,” I smiled at her, “and let me please explain
White is clean as cotton sheets that I put on your bed
White is soft as cloudy clouds that grace the sky and then
White is silky as a pearl, and bright as snow can be
White is sweet as fresh cold milk and smooth as velvet cream.”
“So white is nice and good and fun?” she asked expectantly
“Why yes it is my darling one and just you wait and see
Someday soon before I care to think about it all
You’ll wear a dress all made of white, and love it after all.”
